VIDEO. Google named turmeric a “top trending functional food” as it’s been touted to help with everything from arthritis to weight loss. It’s the main ingredient in golden milk. Let’s look closer. Turmeric is a relative of ginger prized in Ayurvedic medicine. It comes from the orange root of the turmeric plant. The root can be used fresh or dried and then ground into a powder.
Turmeric is popular in cooking…it’s what’s used to make yellow rice… and is a major player in Indian curries. It’s often used as an inexpensive substitute for saffron.
Curcumin is the compound in turmeric that gives it that bright yellow-orange color and has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties in lab and animal studies. Human studies to date show some benefit for curcumin supplements in osteoarthritis of the knee and upset stomach. Curcumin is often combined in a supplement with piperine that comes from black pepper. More studies are being done.
In the meantime it doesn’t hurt to use this flavorful spice to perk up your recipes.
• Sprinkle into scrambled eggs
• Add to vegetable soup or your favorite smoothie
• Combine equal parts turmeric, coriander and cumin in a salt shaker and sprinkle on the flavor

- 1 cup milk, fat free or as desired or light coconut milk
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
- ⅛ teaspoon each ginger, cinnamon and black pepper
- 1 T honey or to your taste
- Whisk milk with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper.
- Add honey.
- Bring to a very low boil.
- Turn down and simmer about 5 minutes.
- Serve warm.
